Book Submissions for Consignment

Congratulations! Regardless of if we end up working together, you’ve written and published a book, which is an amazing feat! If we determine your book is a good fit for the Andover Bookstore, we have an established set of steps to get from here to seeing your book for sale on our shelves. Please note: Submissions made by authors who have strong ties to our bookstore will be prioritized.

How It Works

We are a small bookstore and often have only one staff member to oversee the store. Due to our limited staff resources, we discourage unsolicited phone calls and drop-in visits on the matter of consignment. Following the steps below will ensure that your request is carefully considered by our team:

  1. Read our Consignment Requirements and Terms below.
  2. If you agree with the Consignment Requirements and Terms and wish to proceed, fill out our Consignment Application.
  3. If we determine that your book is a good fit for our store, we will reach out to you with a consignment contract. Please be patient, as we get many submissions.
  1. Due to the persistent harm Amazon does to independent bookstores, we do not carry any books published through Amazon or any of its imprints (KDP, CreateSpace, etc.).
  2. Books must have a spine displaying the title and the author’s name (no spiral-bound books).
    • Since we have limited shelf space, we often have to display books spine out. Books that don’t have their titles readily visible are less likely to sell.
  3. We do not carry any books that have content or images produced by AI.
  4. An application must be filled out online at our website under the Submissions tab (unless directed otherwise).
  1. We charge a $50 consignment fee per title.
    • If you sell 20 copies within the first six months, you will be refunded the $50 fee.
  2. Profits are split 50/50 between the Andover Bookstore and the consignee.
  3. The consignee determines the retail price of any product they sell through consignment.
  4. We make payments to consignees twice a year: once in January and once in July. Payments are made in the form of a check mailed to the address provided by the consignee.
  5. Any damaged or lost products are the sole responsibility of the consignee.
  6. A consignment term lasts for six months. If none of your book sells in a six-month period, we will ask you to pick up your unsold books within 30 days of notice. If the consignee fails to pick up their unsold books, they will be donated.

Consignment Tips

  • Spread the word!
    • Encourage friends and family to buy your book at the Andover Bookstore.
    • Contact local media and mailing lists and inform them that your book is available for purchase at the Andover Bookstore.
    • Send out press releases, review copies, and other promotional materials.
    • Post about your book and where people can buy it on your social media.
  • Get involved!
    • Author events or book signings get the local community talking about your book.
    • Join book clubs, contact libraries, and seek out other book-related groups to make connections.

Greater success comes from a wide variety and volume of author-coordinated promotion. We understand this program will not appeal to every author. However, author involvement leads to greatly increased sales as well as giving the author practice in marketing and advocating for their book. There are THOUSANDS of books to choose from; anything you can do to promote your book will encourage people to pick it up as their next read!

Author Events

You are not required to have an author event to participate in consignment at the Andover Bookstore, but author events are a great way to get involved in the community and advocate for your book.

We typically schedule author events on Thursday evenings at 6:30 pm. They include a reading, a Q&A, and a signing to wrap it up. Successful author events take place when the author publicizes the event widely and secures an audience prior to the event. The Andover Bookstore will promote the event in our store, on our website, on our social media, and in our newsletter.

We cannot schedule author events in the months of November or December due to the rush of the holiday season.
